Backbone

A common form of treatment for spinal injuries are orthopedic back braces. Designed to limit the movement of the spine, medical back braces help by preventing further harm to the spinal cord. Through my personal experience recovering with a back brace, it was found to be highly effective, but unattractive, bulky and difficult to use.

With Backbone, SLS 3D printing is utilised to create a striking and highly individual custom form, generated with data from CAT scans. This method also enables the complex back brace to be constructed from just two slender parts.

Clasps are integrated into the structure of the brace, and enable an easier and more manageable daily application procedure, meaning Backbone is easier to put on even in awkward spaces.
